voces de Justicia (Voices of Justice)

When it comes to rights and reproductive justice women of color have always had the short end of the stick. Undocumented mothers in the United States have always been looked down on. They say that they are draining the U.S system and all the benefits and they are not contributing to our society. The National Latina institute of reproductive rights gives women that do not have voice a chance to speak out but also contribute to the fight for justice. There are not many websites or organizations that are fully committed to these types of issues. They have various links to issues and articles that talk about the advancements and setbacks to their cause. It is interesting for me to see such a big organization advocating for these rights, especially when it comes to Latinas because it is a taboo issue among Latin society. When a lot of us think about reproductive rights for women of color particularly Latinas we think of the strict “catholic” views against abortion and birth control. In the article “Our Issues: access to Health Care” they say that
“Immigrant mothers are vilified and dehumanized in this debate through inhumane policy proposals and derogatory messages,” added Miriam Yeung of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum.
One of the things that they are advocating for is a Health plan that includes immigrant women. The NLIRP have also come up with a health care policy which they are trying to push forward politically.
The brave women from the NLIRP have entered a realm that not a lot of us would dare to enter. A cause that we have only seen the tip but there is much more going on underneath. I praise there advancements and thank them for opening doors for Latinas who many have had the door shut in faces because of their skin color and beliefs.

Hey Janette--better late than never! ;) Don't worry about it....you bring up some great points here especially your comment about the Catholic stance on abortion. Religion influences dominant ideology SO MUCH!!! And, it is very important to understand how religion is also connected to culture. Nice job pointing out how one-dimensional this point of view is and how the Latina Institute is fighting for those voices that are often silenced in this struggle for reproductive justice.
