For this week’s blog, I decided to visit www.vivalafeminista.com, and what came from this was truly inspiring. The woman, who writes this blog, Veronica I. Arreola, is an insight for what a politically active feminist definition would be. Arreola is member of the feminist community, nationally and locally in Chicago, she has worked with organizations such as Planned Parenthood, Women Employed and the National Organization for Women, while working for the University of Chicago in the Women’s research center.
Arreola’s blog contains everything from important news in the political world surrounding women and her community in general, to useful book reviews for books surrounding issues women face. A particularly interesting post I came upon was from a while back about Whittier moms. This blog post was information on a group of Latina, single, mothers, who also work out-side of the home, held a “sleep-in” of sorts demonstration because they believe their children deserve a library at school. Arreola does many follow up posts about this story, and I recommend that you read them all. I thought that this really related back to our class and to Feminism and Motherhood. These mothers are not only full time mothers, and full time employees, but they are balancing the activist part of Feminism and standing up for their children’s rights to literacy and education. They were also fighting for the fact that the students were subject to indecent conditions around the school and the abuse of funds for the school. http://www.vivalafeminista.com/2010/10/who-needs-superman-when-you-have-these.html
Arreola, as mentioned before, is a great example of being an active Feminist. I know for me, reading her posts and about her work makes me want to become more active within my community. Very inspiring blog.

That's awesome Melina! Thanks for sharing about the "sleep-in!" I think this is such an important topic too regarding the balancing act of mothering, working, and being an activist. We will definitely continue discussing this topic and view some videos on it too!
